Adieu Bloglines -- v.f.

Je ne me sers plus de Bloglines pour les flux RSS.

Trop de fois la service n'est pas disponible.  Il existe des flux qui ne marchent plus chez Bloglines...  La service a trop changé.  Ils n'ont plus confiance aux utilisateurs ; il faut vérifier qu'on est humain lors de chaque connexion, et leur captcha est toujours en anglais.  Maintes postes ont des publicités pour un recherche web d'Ask.com.  J'ai vu des flux où le cycle d'abonner ou de lire la page web entière n'a pas de fin.  Pour quelques sommaires, l'information arrête au premier point suivi d'un espace donc s'il s'agit d'un M. Dupont, la nouvelle termine avec M.

J'ai exporté ma liste des flux à Google Reader sans problème.  Quelques flux morts marchent encore.  Les flux qui marchaient chez Bloglines se mettent à jour plus vite chez Google.  La seule chose qui je n'aime pas parfaitement, c'est qu'il est plus difficile d'enregistrer une poste de flux avec Google qu'avec Bloglines.

J'ai lu les commentaires en anglais qui louaient Bloglines ; le plus récent était écrit en 2004.  Ni les questions fréquemment posées (FAQ) ni conditions de service n'indiquaient comment terminer la service mais seulement que c'était possible.  Heureusement il y avait le « Nous joindre » ...

Bye bye Bloglines -- v.o.a.

I no longer use Bloglines to read my RSS feeds.

So many times, their service is unavailable.  Certain feeds no longer work with their service.  They have changed from the service I began with.  They no longer trust their users; I have to verify I am a human at every login.  Many of the posts contain advertisements for an Ask.com web search.  In some cases, Bloglines starts an endless loop when I try to subscribe to a feed or view the website that originates a feed.  For certain summaries, Bloglines stops at the first period (full stop) followed by a space ; if the article talks about St. Louis, the summary will stop after the St.

I exported my list to Google Reader and have had no trouble.  Certain feeds that I thought were dead are working again.  Those that are working are updated more rapidly.  My only issue at this point is that it is harder to save items with GoogleReader than it was with Bloglines.

I read the comments in praise of Bloglines and found none more recent than 2004.  Neither the FAQ nor TOS indicated how to terminate the service, only that it was possible.  That's what the Contact Us... is for, I guess.

The NHL and Québec

In April, the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin. The Ottawa Senators lost 4-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins; Montréal beat the Bruins 4 games to 3 and are now playing the Flyers. Anglophones can listen to the radio broadcasts for their teams live online. Up until last week or so, Francophones could listen to the French radio for the Canadien. For the Senators, NHL.com only has the English radio. Do they forget that the left bank of the Ottawa river is part of the province of Québec? Since Saturday the 19th, the link for the French radio for the Canadien (which, in French, is the correct form of Canadiens) connects to the English broadcast, as does the English link. I sent a complaint through the form at nhl.com; I only got the automated response, in English (except for my French comments).

En avril, les séries éliminatoires pour la Coupe Stanley commencent. Les Sénateurs d'Ottawa ont perdu 4-0 aux Penguins de Pittsburgh ; le Canadien a défait les Bruins 4 matchs à 3 et jouent contre les Flyers. Les Anglophones peuvent écouter les diffusions radio de leurs équipes en direct sur internet ; jusqu'en semaine dernière, les Francophones ont pu écouter la radio française du Canadien. Pour les matchs des Sénateurs, la diffusion radio est disponible sur nhl.com en anglais seulement. Oublient-ils que la rive gauche de l'Outaouais, c'est le Québec ? Et depuis le samedi 19 avril, le lien pour la radio française du Canadien (ou des Canadiens, selon leur site web, dirigée par les anglophones) se joint à la radio anglaise des Tricolores. Le lien pour la radio anglaise de Montréal est toujours valide. J'ai envoyé une plainte avec la formulaire du site nhl.com (aucun site web ne se trouve à lnh.com , ni à lnh.ca) ; la seule réponse était qu'on avait reçu le courriel, et c'etait en anglais sauf ce que j'avais écrit moi-même.

Du bayou à la Baie Verte - v.f.

Les quatre quarts derniers pour les Packers avant Brett Lorenzo Favre, qui a annoncé sa retraite.

Il pourrait jouer encore, il pourrait bien jouer cet automne prochain mais il ne pourrait pas jouer comme Brett Favre. Cette saison dernière il a travaillé plus fort loin du terrain de jeu qu'il n'eut travaillé depuis longtemps ou peut-être plus que jamais. S'il reviendrait, il ne jouerait pas au niveau Favre que tout le monde et lui-même demanderaient.

En 1992, Favre a complété la première passe de sa carrière...et l'a reçue lui-même. (En 1991 avec Atlanta, il avait 4 tentatives de passe dont deux interceptés par les Redskins.) J'ai 7 verges de plus sur des réceptions pour la carrière professionelle.

Ron Wolf, des Jets de New York, voulait choisir Favre dans le repêchage de 1991; Atlanta l'a choisi avant. En 1992, Wolf qui était alors avec Green Bay, a échangé une sélection dans le premier tour du repêchage de 1992 (les Packers en avait deux) aux Falcons, qui ont ensuite choisi Tony Smith, un demi de la même université que Favre.

L'entraîneur Holmgren a dit que le quart du Mississipi, de Kiln (ou Fenton ou bien Diamondhead?) avait l'accent le plus fort qu'il avait jamais entendu aux sessions de pratique.
À Chicago, la plupart des matchs d'après-midi, et beaucoup des matchs de soir des Packers étaient disponibles à la chaîne de radio de Milwaukee (les parties de l'Université du Wisconsin paraissent parfois dans les journaux de Chicago).

En 1993, Favre a mené l'association nationale (NFC) avec 24 passes interceptées. Il en a ajouté 3 en éliminatoires et 2 au match des étoiles.

Favre a remplacé Majkowski comme quart partant à cause de la blessure de celui-ci (au cours d'un sac par Tim Krumrie). Holmgren a annoncé que Favre continuerait comme partant avant le retour de Majkowski.

Quand même, il y avait de la discussion de quel quart il fallait garder et lequel serait mis au repêchage d'expansion pour les Jaguars et les Panthers en 1995. Je me souviens d'écouter le match du jeudi soir en 1994 (le Pack était au Minnesota) quand Favre s'est blessé et Mark Brunell a fini la partie.

Favre finit sa carrière avec des records bien connus : Passes complétées- Tentatives de passes- passes interceptées- touchés- verges, autant que parties de 3 touchés, victoires, matchs consécutifs comme quart/quart partant, matchs éliminatoires consécutifs avec une passe de touché, et d'autres que j'oublie. Il était le quart partant pour chaque match depuis septembre 1992, quand Bush père était le président des États-Unis. Les Packers de Favre avait un moyen de 10 victoires (en 16 matchs) par saison, ci-inclus trois saisons avec 13 victoires. (Les Colts d'Indianapolis ont un moyen de 10,5 pendant l'ère Peyton Manning ; Manning aura besoin d'encore cinq ans pour égaler Favre.) Son pourcentage de victoire contre les équipes de la division Nord de la NFC est supérieur au pourcentage contre la ligue entière. Il était 13-0 contre les Lions (de Détroit) à Green Bay et 3-0 contre eux à Milwaukee. Quand Dave Wannstedt était entraîneur des Bears de Chicago pendant le début de l'ère Favre, celui-là considérait les matchs Packers-Bears comme rien de spécial, ignorant que c'était la rivalité la plus contestée de l'histoire de la NFL.

Seulement John Elway a plus de ses 40 matchs gagné en quatrième période (ou prolongation). Je m'en souviens d'un match ou le Robert Brooks, en retour de botté d'envoi, a couru à la ligne de côté au 15 des Packers dans les deux minutes dernières ; ce match ne se trouve pas avec la liste de WTMJ.

On dit que Favre a mal joué dans les stades de dôme ; je pense que les matchs à l'extérieur sur turf artificiel lui étaient pires (0-9 à Dallas, ci-inclus éliminatoires ; des problèmes aussi à Philadelphie).

Favre était le dernier quart des Packers au match à Milwaukee, la deuxième domicile du Pack pendant 62 ans. Aux neuf matchs là, Favre en a gagné 7 avec défaites contre le Minnesota en '93 et Miami en '94.

Favre se trouve au 4e rang des passes de touché au champs Soldier Field à Chicago, même sans touché en 2007. (On ignore les passes interceptées pour touché.) Pendant le dernier match entre les Packers et les Bears, j'étais chez mes parents pour Noël. Les Packers avait le ballon au 14 des Bears. Ma mère a dit « Okay, nous voulons un touché ici ! » Elle aurait dû être plus exacte ; la passe était interceptée et Brian Urlacher a marqué un touché pour Chicago.

Pendant une partie de l'ère Favre, le réseau de radio des Packers avait des chaînes au Mississippi, l'État natal de Favre. J'ai regardé leur page web après les nouvelles de la retraite ; aucune chaîne au Mississippi.

Favre a lancé la plupart des passes que Sterling Sharpe a reçues quand celui-ci est devenu le premier receveur de l'histoire de la NFL avec des saisons consécutives de 100 receptions. Sharpe a reçu la première passe de touché de Favre (mais Kitrick Taylor a reçu la passe de touché qui a gagné le match).

Avant la saison 2007, Favre était le dernier quart qui ait défait les Patriots en Super Bowl.

En 1997, l'année de son 3e honneur de Joueur par Excellence (partagée avec Barry Sanders), Favre a reposé pendant les deux dernières périodes du dernier match de la saison. L'annonceur de radio a dit que le Packers avait « rien qu'un mortel » au quart. On peut démontrer la valeur d'un joueur en regardant l'équipe sans lui.

Pendant les semaines dernières, je considérais comment la carrière d'Elway a fini. En 1996, les Broncos d'Elway ont fini 13-3 mais ont manqué le Super Bowl. Il est revenu pendant les deux saisons prochaines avec deux championnats (contre Favre et les Packers en 1997). En 2007, Favre a fini 13-3 mais a manqué le Super Bowl. Je doute que les Packers eussent pu défaire les Patriots en Arizona cette année. (En tant que les Colts sont mon équipe no 2, je suis content que les Patriots n'aient pas fini la saison entière sans défaite.)

Il y avait un match à Tampa (avant la Super Bowl des Bucs, peut-être Tampa était toujours en division Centrale) où Favre a demandé de la silence à la foule...et la foule s'est tue.

Et il y avait récemment le match où il a dégagé d'un défenseur en feignant une passe à ce défenseur.

Et pour l'aspect de bibliothèque, il a écrit (en anglais) Favre : pour le record ; aussi Favre avec sa mère ; il a écrit l'avant-propos ou qqch de la sorte pour Plus qu'un anneau par son receveur Don Beebe et Dans son ombre par le fils de Reggie White. Il a aidé son entraîneur d'université avec De 10 à 4 : le voyage de Brett Favre de Rotten Bayou au sommet de la NFL. Il y a également les vidéos dont A crash course on calcium pour le conseil national de produits laitiers. Sa femme Deanna a récemment écrit Ne pariez pas contre moi ! Ce titre vient de quelque-chose que Brett a dit pendant la saison du championnat de 1996. Madame Favre est présidente d'honneur du programme Donnez-un- livre-à- un-enfant de la bibliothèque du compté Brown (Wisconsin) depuis des années.

From the Bayou to Green Bay - v.a.

The last four Packers to play at quarterback before Brett Lorenzo Favre, who has announced his retirement from the team.

He can still play, he could be a good quarterback this coming fall, but he just can't be Brett Favre good anymore. This season, he worked harder off the field than he had in a long time, if ever. If he returns, he would not to be at the Brett Favre level all of us, and especially the man himself, have come to expect.

In 1992, Favre completed the first pass of his NFL career...to himself. (He had 4 attempts for Atlanta in 1991; the Redskins intercepted 2 of them.) I have 7 more career receiving yards than Favre does.

Ron Wolf of the New York Jets wanted to draft Favre in 1991; Atlanta beat him to it. In 1992, with Green Bay, Wolf traded one of two first-round picks that the Packers had to Atlanta. The Falcons selected running back Tony Smith, also of Southern Mississippi.

Coach Mike Holmgren mentioned that he had never had someone with so strong an accent in practice as the QB from Kiln, Mississippi (or was it Fenton, or Diamondhead?).

In Chicago, most of the afternoon games and many of the evening games were available on radio from the Milwaukee station. (WTMJ's Wisconsin football games were sometimes mentioned in Chicago papers.)

In 1993, Favre led the NFC with 24 interceptions. He threw 3 in the playoffs, and 2 more in the Pro Bowl.

Favre took over for Majkowski as starting quarterback due to the latter's injury (on a sack by Tim Krumrie of Cincinnati). It was before Majkowski returned that Coach Holmgren announced Favre would continue to start.

And yet, Holmgren had to be talked into keeping Favre instead of Mark Brunell by one of his assistants when the expansion draft was held before the Jaguars and Panthers entered the league in 1995. I remember listening to the Thursday night game (the Pack was in Minnesota) in '94 when Favre got hurt and Brunell had to finish.

Favre finishes his career with some of the most noted NFL QB records: Completions- Attempts- Interceptions- Touchdowns- Yards, as well as 3-TD games, wins as a starter, consecutive starts/ appearances for a quarterback, consecutive playoff games throwing a touchdown, and probably some I am forgetting. He started every game since September of 1992, when Daddy Bush was President. Favre's Packers averaged ten wins per season, including three seasons of 13 wins. (The Colts have averaged 10.5 in Peyton Manning's ten years; he'll need five years or so to catch Favre there.) His winning percentage against the NFC North is higher than his overall winning percentage. He was 13-0 against the Lions in Green Bay and 3-0 in Milwaukee. During Favre's early years, Bears coach Dave Wannstedt viewed the Packers as just another game instead of the most contested rivalry in NFL history.

He trails only John Elway with his 40 4th-quarter comebacks, including one I didn't see mentioned at the WTMJ website when Robert Brooks ran the kickoff out of bounds at the Packer 15 or so in the last two minutes.

They often talk about how badly Favre performed in domes; I think that outdoor games on artificial turf were worse (0-9 in Dallas including playoffs, also games on Philadelphia's artificial surface).

He was the last Packer QB to start a game in Milwaukee, the Pack's second home for 62 years. Favre was 7-2 in his nine games there, losing to Minnesota in '93 and Miami in '94.

He's 4th on the all-time list for most touchdown passes at Soldier Field, Chicago, even though he didn't have any in his last game there. The total just includes touchdowns thrown to the Packers. During the most recent Bears game, when I was home with my parents for Christmas, the Pack had the ball at the Bears 14 yard line. My mother said, "Ok, we want a touchdown here!" She should have been more specific ; Favre threw an interception and Brian Urlacher ran it back for a Chicago TD.

During at least part of Favre's career, the Packer Radio Network had affiliates in Favre's home state of Mississippi. When I checked their website Tuesday, those stations were not listed.

He threw most of the passes that Sterling Sharpe caught when Sharpe became the first receiver in NFL history with consecutive seasons of 100 catches. Sharpe caught Favre's first touchdown pass (but Kitrick Taylor caught the one that won that game).

Prior to this season, Favre was the last starting QB to beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

In 1997, the year of his 3rd MVP (shared with Barry Sanders), Favre sat out the second half of the final game of the season. Broadcaster Jim Irwin said that the Packers had a mere mortal (Steve Bono) at quarterback for that half. One way to show a player's value is to look at the team without him.

In the past few weeks, I was considering how Elway's career ended. In 1996, Elway's Broncos went 13-3 and missed the Super Bowl. He came back for two more seasons and two more Super Bowl Championships (including beating Favre after the 1997 season). In 2007, Favre went 13-3 and missed the Super Bowl. I don't think the Packers could have beaten this year's Patriots in Arizona. (As the Colts are my #2 team, I'm glad the Pats did not finish 19-0.) Elway did not play for the team who drafted him; he said he would rather play for the Yankees than the Colts.

There was one game in Tampa (before the Bucs' Super Bowl season, I think-Tampa may have still been in the NFC Central) where Favre asked the crowd for quiet....and got it.

Then there was the recent game where he avoided a tackle by faking a lateral to the defender.

And for the library angle, he is the author of Favre : for the record ; of Favre (with his mother) ; he wrote the introduction to receiver Don Beebe's More than a ring and the foreword to In his shadow, by Reggie White's son (brother?). He helped his college coach on 10 to 4 : Brett Favre's journey from Rotten Bayou to the top of the NFL. That does not include the videorecordings, including A Crash Course on Calcium for the National Dairy Council. His wife Deanna recently came out with her own book, Don't bet against me! Her title came from something Brett said during the 1996 Super Bowl championship season. Mrs. Favre has been the honorary chair of the Brown County (Wis.) Give-A-Kid-A-Book campaign for years, and she was already in Green Bay when he flew up for the press conference this morning.

Malgré ce que l'on peut lire quelque part, ce n'était pas le Super-Bowl 62 (LXII) mais seulement XLII. J'ai trouvé plus de 5000 sites en recherchant « Super Bowl LXII » avec Google ; on a aussi suggéré l'orthographe « Super Bowl XLII »

Unlike what you may read in some places, it was not Super Bowl 62 (LXII) but XLII. A Google search for Super Bowl LXII returned over 5000 hits and a recommendation to try XLII.

Le Blog de Steve Johnson - v.f.

Le LJB m'a introduit au blog Hypertext de Steve Johnson, du Chicago Tribune.

Le lien aujourd'hui discutait les livres électroniques sur Blackberry. Il vient de lire la version électronique d'Orgueil et Préjugé et il commence à lire les autres œuvres de Jane Austen. L'Âge d'alphabétisation n'est plus seulement les paroles écrites sur la page. Puisque l'auteur a souvent son Blackberry, il peut lire le roman pendant ce qui était autrefois du temps perdu en attendant. « And, all the while, I looked like I was doing work, or at least e-mail. » -- Et, tout le temps, il a paru que je travaillais, ou au moins faisais du courriel.

L'un des cours de linguistique que j'ai suivis était une introduction à l'alphabétisation avec le but d'en enseigner dans les cultures qui sont toujours moins alphabétisées que la nôtre. Le premier jour, la prof nous a demandé quel était le dernier livre que nous eussions lu. Je ne pouvais pas m'en souvenir, mais j'ai dit que j'avais écouté des livres sur cassette en voyageant de la Virginie au Dakota du Nord. Elle a répondu que les formes alternatives d'alphabétisation sont toujours valides. J'écoute la plupart de la série Anne de la maison aux pignons verts sur K-7 en conduisant à travers les É.-U., surtout aux montagnes de la partie septentrionale de la Virginie (parbleu!) Occidentale où la radio n'est pas fiable. Malheureusement, à cause de la prolifération des lecteurs CD dans les voitures, il devient de plus en plus difficile de trouver des livres sur K-7.

Un autre article récent du blog de Johnson a comparé des moteurs de recherche online. Dans le travail des bibliothécaires, il est utile et nécessaire de comparer des sources de référence. J'en ai regardé avec les paroles « moteur de recherche » en trois mots. Avec Google.fr, Google.fr était résultat numéro 14. Search.yahoo.com avait google.fr en 2e position. Après avoir changé Live.com en version franco-canadienne, google.fr s'est trouvée n^o 17. Alltheweb avait google.fr n^o 20. Moteur.org a trop de pop-ups et aucun google aux 15 premiers résultats. Pour changer de langue avec Ask.com, on doit choisir «Advanced» au lieu de «Options» ; Google se retrouve au n^o 13. La liste à gauche (narrow your search [raffiner votre recherche]) aux résultats 1 à 10 n'a que deux suggestions (dont une de porno) ; Google s'y trouve en 6e position sur la deuxième page.
